iPad 5 specs, release date and price rumors
We lay out what we know about the latest iPad from Apple
Now that Apple's iOS 7 is official, it looks like we're getting even closer to the introduction of the iPad 5. In this article, we'll let you know all the rumors we've heard so far about the iPad 5 release date, specs and price. The iPad practically invented the modern tablet space, but the competition from Android and Windows 8 is coming on strong. So the real question is, will Apple's iPad 5 have what it takes to continue to outdo its rivals?
iPad 5 Release Date Rumors
A ‘trusted source’ has leaked information about the iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 and the iPhone 5S, along with code names and specific spec. According to the source, by October we’ll see a new full size iPad and iPad Mini, which have the codes J72 and J85 respectively.
In the past, Apple would have already had an iPad event or at least sent out invitation for the press conference but this year's event is a bit up in the air. It's further complicated when you consider that the iPad mini and the iPad 4th generation were released last fall. Still, the latest rumors have the iPad 5 pegged for a May event with a release in June.
This info has been backed up by a case manufacturer now -- Gumdrop Cases is so certain of it that its latest ad depicts a new Drop Tech case for the iPad 5, which will go on sale June 10.
However, another source has stipulated that the iPad 5 will not be announced at Apple's WWDC conference next week.
Others think the iPad 5 will happen after the iPhone 5S's release date, reportedly happening before fall, when Apple says its next product launch will take place. Maybe Apple will launch both devices in September?
- iPad 5 release date should be after iPhone 5S
- iPad 5 could be 33 percent lighter and launch in September
Update: Gumdrop Cases was clearly wrong about the iPad 5 release date. Apple did not reveal a new iPad (or a new iPhone, for that matter) during its WWDC 2013 Keynote. However, Gumdrop Cases is continuing to push its new line of iPad 5 cases. The company is either truly convinced that we'll see Apple's fifth-gen tablet surface sooner than expected, or it's just really bad at admitting defeat. Gumdrop's iPad 5 case shows a 360-degree view of the product, indicating that the iPad 5 will indeed be thinner and lighter than its predecessor (reports suggest that it will be up to 15 percent thinner and anywhere from 25 to 33 percent lighter). The iPad 5 case also indicates that we'll see less bezel, keeping the design more in line with that of the iPad mini.
iPad 5 Specs Rumors
The iPad 5 is expected to have a similar display as the iPad 4th Generation: a 9.7-inch retina display with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 and 264 pixels per inch. Apple may be able to bump up the resolution but I wouldn't expect it because that would also throw app compatibility out of whack. However, don't be surprised if the pixels per inch get a nice little bump. Rumors suggest that it may use an IGZO display, which could make the device even thinner while also not taking such a hit on the battery life.
Speaking of which, expect the iPad 5 to have at least as good battery life as the device which preceeded it and there have been some crazy rumors suggesting that Apple is working on a way to really extend the battery life when it's in standby mode. I've found the iPad is already excellent with standby battery and I'd be very impressed to see if Apple could improve on that.
The iPad 5 should have the next-generation A7 processor, some boosted RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, the option to have 4G LTE and it will likely come in a variety of storage options, including 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 128GB version eventually like we saw with the iPad 4 but that may not land until later.
One interesting rumor is that Apple will be taking what it learned from the iPad mini and making the iPad 5 even lighter and thinner than its current full-sized iPads. This would be quite a feat of engineering but we do know that Apple constantly wants to make its devices lighter and thinner and has successfully done that with the iPhone 5.
A leaked case from what purports to be the iPad 5 has popped up online and this indicates that the next iPad may have a lot of iPad mini design elements.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPad 5 will be about 15 percent thinner and 25 percent lighter than the 4th Generation iPad. It will also supposedly do away with a lot of the side bezel and it should also sport the new A7 processor to go along with a boosted camera. Look forward to a 9.7-inch retina display on the iPad 5.
The front bezel of what purports to be the iPad 5 has leaked online. It suggests that the bezel for the next iOS tablet will feature narrower edges than its predecessors. This might mean that the device could actually end up being smaller, while still keeping the same screen size.
iPad 5 Pricing Rumors
We would be shocked if the iPad 5 deviated from the pricing models we're seeing now. We expect the iPad 5 to start at $499 for the 16GB model and it will increase by $100 for every doubling of the storage. That means a 32GB model should cost $599 and $699 will get you the 64GB version. If you want 4G LTE built in, expect the iPad 5 to start at $629 for the 16GB model and it will increase by $100 for each tier of storage you go up. Look for 4G LTE support from Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and probably T-Mobile.
We'll be constantly updating this piece as more information comes out. Be sure to keep it locked here and let us know what you think. What new features and designs do you hope to see in the iPad 5?
