We lay out a list of the best apps for your new iPad mini

Have you picked up an iPad mini recently? In this post, we'll show off the best apps for the iPad mini and explain why these programs help you get the most out of your Apple tablet. Yes, the App Store is a wild and crowded place, but this list will help you get started.

No doubt you're excited as all get out to have that shiny new iPad mini, but the fun doesn't really begin until you load up that tiny tablet with apps. After you've downloaded the obvious suspects, like Facebook and Twitter, here are some others to get you started:

How to Cook Everything

The App Store just turned five years old and the How to Cook Everything app is free for a limited time. Download it immediately.

Even if you're not that interested in cooking, it's always nice to have the option. The How to Cook Everything app is a wonderful way to well, cook everything. It gives you recipes, easy-to-follow guides and nice pictures. It covers a wide variety of dishes, so it has entres, desserts and more.

The How to Cook Everything app has more than 2,000 recipes and 400 how-to illustrations. Go get it!

HBO Go

The HBO Go app turns your iPad mini into an entertainment powerhouse...if you already subscribe to HBO.

With the HBO Go app, you can stream your favorite HBO shows and movies on demand. This includes new episodes of series like Game of Thrones, as well as older classics like The Sopranos. You also get access to a wide variety of new and classic movies.

The one downside of this app is that you have to already be subscribing to HBO and log in with your cable account. Some providers don't play nice with HBO Go, either.

Kindle

Sure, the iPad mini can easily get iBooks, but for my money, I prefer the Kindle app for reading my e-books.

The Kindle app gives you a large library of e-books and its interface looks great on the iPad mini's screen. You get some nice syncing with your digital library or the ability to highlight pages or texts.

One pain is that you can't directly buy books from the app due to a squabble between Amazon and Apple over in-app purchases, but you can buy them from the Safari browser or on a computer and have it sync up wirelessly.
