iPhone 6, iPad 5 release date revealed as Fall
Apple hinted that the iPhone 5S, iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 are coming later in the year
Apple just dropped the biggest hint yet about when it plans to release the follow-ups to the iPhone 5 and the iPad: Fall of 2013. That's right, don't expect the iPhone 6 or iPad 5 for another few months.
During a conference call for its solid second quarter financial statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple couldn't wait to show off the new hardware and services it was working on and planned to introduce in the Fall and throughout 2014. This does fit into the broader rumors we've been hearing about possible delays in the next iPhone and iPad.
What should we expect from Apple now? Well, I think it's safe to say that we'll get a deep look at iOS 7 during Apple's WWDC, which is expected in June or July. Apple may then introduce its iPhone 5S or whatever it's called in the late Summer or in September. Most rumors have the iPhone 5S being in the same body as the iPhone 5 but with boosted internals and new software.
The iPad is a different story, as Apple continues to see massive growth in this category - it sold more iPad minis during this last quarter than it did during the first quarter the iPad mini was introduced. Historically, Apple would have released or had an iPad event by this time but it looks like it is shifting that to the Fall.
So, I think it's safe to say that we'll be seeing the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 at an event late in the Fall. The iPad 5 should be thinner, lighter and sport less of a bezel than previous models and the iPad mini 2 should bring the Retina Display to the smaller form factor. Expect both to get a bump in the processor department and camera but the iPad 5 should still have a bit more overall horsepower than its little brother.
Does the lack of a new iPhone and iPad open the door for competitors like Samsung or HTC? Are you going to wait for the iPhone 5S and iPad 5?
