Sprint's mobile hotspot feature allows HTC EVO 4G users to share their 3G or 4G data connection with up to eight devices over Wi-Fi.

As great and useful as this feature is, $30 per month is a tall order when EVO 4G owners are already paying an extra $10 each month for "premium" data services.

Thanks to the open nature of the Android OS, there is a relatively simple way to enable the Wi-Fi tethering feature on your EVO 4G without using Sprint's app and service.

The best part about it ... it's free!

Here, we show you exactly what you need to enable free mobile hotspot capabilities on your HTC EVO 4G:

First, you'll need to root your HTC EVO 4G -- see our guide, How to root the HTC EVO 4G, for instructions

Now, all you need is the free Android Wi-Fi Tether app -- click here to download version 2.0.2-pre14 or later for EVO 4G support. You can also download the installer file right from your EVO 4G web browser by entering the following URL in the address bar:

Again, make sure you download the proper version (2.0.2-pre14 or later) to ensure the EVO 4G is supported. If you're not sure which version to choose, simply select the build at the top of the list.

That's it! Once the app is installed, you'll be able to share your HTC EVO 4G's data connection via Wi-Fi with any devices you wish. The Android Wi-Fi Tether app also supports WEP encryption to provide some security and keep unwelcome guests off your hotspot.
