Samsung has been on the ball with its PR in the last 24 hours. First, the company announced a press conference for Aug. 29. Then, just when all the speculation started to heat up, it confirmed that the date has indeed been set aside for the launch of the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 2 – a full two weeks before Tim Cook is expected to take to the stage to unveil Apple’s new iPhone 5.

A spokesperson for Samsung confirmed details of the event, saying "We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin on Aug. 29," nipping any potential for doubt in the bud, but stopping short of giving us any concrete details of what the device has in store.

The device is widely expected to feature a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, and rumors also suggest that the Note 2 will feature a quad-core Exynos CPU clocked to 2GHz, giving the device more power than virtually anything else on the market.

The original Galaxy Note became a runaway success when it was released late last year, despite lukewarm early reviews that took Samsung to task for employing a stylus and making the device too bulky to operate single-handed.

Samsung has no idea what it will be taking on come September when Apple plans to launch its new iPhone and iPad Mini, but a healthy dose of top-tier hardware, some competitive pricing and the same attention to detail as was recently seen in the Galaxy S3 could be all it needs to take an even bigger slice of the smartphone market away from a Jobs-less Apple.
