iPhone 5 comes to Straight Talk with $45 monthly plan
Straight Talk and Walmart are offering the iPhone 5 with a $45 or $60 monthly plan, but it will have upfront costs
Have you been wanting to pick up an iPhone 5 but didn't want a long-term contract? Well, you'll be happy to hear that Walmart and Straight Talk Wireless will be offering the latest Apple smartphone and it comes with a monthly plan that can cost as little as $45.
Because there's no contract, the 16GB iPhone 5 will cost $649 but Walmart is offering a no-interest finance plan of $25 a month until the cost is paid off.
"We believe customers shoudn't have to choose between saving money and having the latest technology," said Seong Ohm, senior VP for Walmart, in a prepared statement. "Now customers can have the coveted iPhone with unlimited talk, text and data without a contract for $70 a month, thanks to our exclusive Straight Talk plan and industry first financing offer."
The Straight Talk service uses AT&T's or Verizon's networks to offer mobile services to Walmart and it's one of the reasons I've ditched a long-term contract. For $45 a month, you get unlimited talk, text and "unlimited" data -- this generally caps out at about 2GB per month. A $60 option includes international calls and even more data.
It's unclear if this iPhone 5 will have 4G LTE on Straight Talk and that is a blow because that speed is one of the great things about the new iPhone. Still, some iPhone 5 users on Straight Talk will get HSPA+ speeds, and when you factor in how much you can save on monthly fees, it may be worth it.
