The Asus Fonepad is a 7-inch tablet with phone capabilities and comes in at a bargain price

Asus introduced the FonePad at Mobile World Congress and this seven-inch tablet will be sure to generate interest because not only does it look like a good tablet that can make calls, it will be landing for only $249.

The FonePad looks very similar to the Nexus 7, which is not much of a surprise considering Asus built that, too. It has a seven-inch, 1280 x 800 IPS screen that's fairly bright and responsive. Inside, we're looking at a 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, an HSPA+ radio, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The FonePad is an interesting product because it will have the ability to slide a microSIM in to make phone calls and to surf the Web. Other markets have seen large tablets be able to make calls but this may be the first one that hits the United States in a major way. I don't see many people holding up this tablet to their ear but with Bluetooth earpieces, one could easily use this to take calls.

With this and the just-announced Padfone Infinity, Asus had quite an interesting MWC 2013. The Infinity likely won't make it to the United States but I have the feeling that the Asus FonePad could be a minor hit.
