The iPhone 5 vs. the BlackBerry Z10! Which smartphone is better?

With the BlackBerry Z10 finally here, the device is getting plenty of love from many around the tech community. The Z10 is fast and it packs extremely good specs -- it even has support for 4G LTE.

While there’s no escaping the fact that the BlackBerry 10-powered Z10 is likely a pretty good smartphone, we wanted to see how it stacks up to other flagships, especially Apple's iPhone 5. Is it better? Is the BlackBerry 10 up to par? Does it have a better build quality/design? How's the camera?

Read on below for the full comparison! You might be surprised!

Design

The design of the iPhone 5 and Z10 couldn't be any different, but let's start with the Z10 first. The Z10 is super thin and extremely light. It is really all display in a single uni-body and not much bezel. It's dark and very slick. The Z10 really looks quite nice.

The iPhone 5, meanwhile, features a light, metal frame. It has a considerable amount of bezel and feels extremely nice in the hand. The iPhone 5 looks like a phone fit for a king

Winner - BlackBerry Z10. The Z10 looks more mature than the iPhone 5 and black is always sexy. Honestly, I have to hand it to RIM here, the Z10's design really rocks.

Specs

Apple’s iPhone 5 runs on a dual-core Cortex-A15 CPU. This is a huge deal because it means Apple beat all others on bringing A15s to market. The device also makes excellent use of the PowerVR GPU, which delivers solid gaming performance at reasonable temperatures, and the device has 1 GB of RAM RAM.

The iPhone comes in three flavors: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB but, offers no support for removable memory.

The Z10, on the other hand, is powered by the dual-core S4 CPU, clocked to 1.2GHz. Its powerful GPU offers superb gaming performance and the device rocks 2GB RAM. It's pretty freaking awesome.

Like the iPhone 5, the Z10 also features 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of storage. The Z10 also offer no support for removable memory.

Winner – iPhone 5, hands down! The dual-core Cortel A15 CPU simply can't be beat!

Screen

The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch HD display which operates at a pixel density of 326PPI. That's quite a bit less than the 356PPI found on the Z10.

From what we can tell, the Z10 screen looks great and blows away the display on the iPhone 5. It's brighter, color reproduction is better and it just looks better in the dark.

Winner – BlackBerry Z10

Software

Apple’s iPhone 5 is powered by iOS 6, and while the operating system is still the most user friendly and polished in the land, it is starting to feel a little tired and one-dimensional. The Z10, meanwhile, runs BlackBerry 10, RIM's all new mobile OS.

One thing that will always work in Apple’s favor is its App Store, which offers over 800,000 apps – giving the iPhone 5 a huge software-based shot in the arm. I really can't say how much the App Store gives Apple the upper hand.

The Z10 draws its software resources from BlackBerry App World. BlackBerry's App World currently only has 70,000 apps total. Most of these don't compare to those found on iOS and just plain suck.

Winner – iPhone 5

Camera

The Apple iPhone 45 sports an all-new, better 8-megapixel shooter which includes a3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor. The camera also features a five-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture, which should maks for pretty good image quality in low-light situations.

The Z10 offers an 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p full-HD video recording. The main camera has a flash unit, image stabilisation, and a backside illuminated sensor.

Output from the 8-megapixel camera is generally OK but not as good as the sample photos I'm seeing from the iPhone 5.

Winner – iPhone 5...again

And the overall winner is..

The iPhone 5

The devices are, in most areas, evenly matched, but the iPhone 5 seems to have just more polish so far. Again, this is just from what I can tell thus far. No full review has been done for the Z10 on our side just yet

While the 5 might be better, the choice between the two devices is largely subjective. If you're into RIM, you'll love the Z10, but if you like Apple products, you can't go wrong with the iPhone 5.

What smarthone will you be buying? The iPhone 5 or the newly-unveiled BlackBerry Z10?
